I believe that Pitbulls get a lot of negative press is because they are a popular breed and there are more APBT (throughout the world esp, in the USA where most Pitbull attacks occur) than say Neo Mastiff, Fila Brasiliero and the Presa Canario. If any of the latter 3 breeds mentioned were more popular than the APBT then I believe (though I could be wrong) there would be more attacks by these dogs than the APBT and therefore they would get all the negative press rather than the APBT. If there were fewer APBT's they probably would'nt have the image they have of being nasty dogs.

You are right about that. Most of the attacks that do occur by pits arent really pits. People think if it looks like a pit and attacks then it must be a pit. A lot of them dont even have pit blood in them.

Oh heck it doesn't even have to look like a pitbull to be the dog that causes a 'pit bull attack' the press rarely has a clue what any breed is and the word 'pitbull' brings out more readers it seems
Biggest problem I see with pitbulls is they are too frequently owned by idiots.

All these NONAME people keep mentioning that the media has no clue what is a pitbull looks like or any dog the looks like a pit is automatically classed as a pit.

Tell me where you get this information from? Did you talk to the reporters? See it happen and knew that it was not a pit? If not, then you are assume, just like what you say the media does with pits.

Now I know only 2 breeds that even closely resemble pits, the APBT and the AmStaff. Do think a chow, dalmation, or even a preso, look like pits? I would say not, but like you say the media has not clue or is it you?

I'll give you an example - big media stories in a city in the northeast about 'vicious pitbull attack', no pictures lots of gore and horror in story, next day way in the back a picture of the dog responsible - looked like a golden retriever german shepherd mix no pit characteristics at all and also a listing that all the horror of the day before meant some kid had 6 stitches.
Sure sometimes its actually a purebred pitbull involved but not always.
Another example - town officials were given a stack of pictures of dog breeds to sort out the ones they were sure were pitbulls (people were working against a breed specific ordinance). Dogs picked out as being for sure pitbulls included a boston terrier, a pug, a boxer, great dane pups, a bull terrier, a bulldog, a mastiff, a bull mastiff, and a rhodesian ridgeback .... oh yeah some of the officials weren't sure about the only two breeds in the stack that were commonly referred to as pitbulls - one was an amstaff and the other an APBT

Are you aware that APBT is in fact a Pit Bull? American Pit Bull Terrier. You say they closely resemble pits??? How are you even argueing this?

Don't know if this is the case or not but 'street pits' and APBT registered dogs are almost as different as the AmStaff and the APBT can be (and yes I know UKC considers them the same breed).
I believe its due to all the mixing in the unregistered dogs. I'll never forget the 'giant pitbulls' someone had - they crossed bullmastiffs and APBT to get 'bigger pitbulls' and those dogs went right into the local 'pit' breeding population of street dogs. Take a look at the listed pitbulls on petfinder you go through the pictures and say 'uh huh' and then you go 'WOW thats a *real* pitbull' - the differences in the breed characteristics are there if you know how to see them though lots of people don't know it. Not to say the other dogs might not be pitbulls they just are not very good ones.

To sasha

I am Onyx44 but the site does not recognize my pwd.

I know APBT stands for Am. PitBull Terrier. What i meant about 'pits' was any dog that has any ABPT or Amstaff blood in them. You still refer to your story about he said she said. Where was this at? What state? City? Newspaper?

You seem to be overly defensive about this subject and i can understand that, with you loving your dogs. I would be the same way if the subject of Dobermans came up. I know my dog is loving with me and my family done as much as i can about socializing him(bring him to my sons school for show and tell and to let everyone pet him), but i dont ever forget what he was breed for and what he is capable of.

Hi- I am new to this site and I am glad to find so many people with APBTs like myself. I have to say that people cause the problems with animals. My pit is socialized and loving with all people. I have to agree that the media does play up to pit attacks and sometimes are very ignorant in their assumptions about the breed. I truly believe that any dogs is capable of attacking, regardless of breed. It all really depends on the environment the dog is raised in. I myself was attakced as a teen by our family dog, a Lhapso Apso. So you never know...
