need help!!! -bull terrier mix

here is the situation - i have always wanted a bull terrier. from reading this forum for a bit, it is obvious their wonderful qualities are appreciated by many of you. i finally have a place of my own, so i am all set. only problem is my girlfriend says a bull just isn't *cute* enough. she is pretty adamant that she wants a lab or something of the sort. well...i am thinking that i could compromise with a bull mix. Does anyone have experience with a bull mix? Any breeds to recommend? Anyone have a bull-lab mix? what to avoid? Ideally, I want the dog to be around 40 pounds or less and generally retain the qualities of the bull. maybe just dump the girlfriend instead? (j/k) Thank you very much for any help you may be able to offer

i guess i suggest dont do any of what you mentioned...first crossing a bull and a lab may cause strains in their genes...there are already a lot of breeds nowadays...and crossbreeds sometimes turn out not so good both for the dogs and the owners as well...dont dump your girlfriend too just because she didnt like pits...if you got to like the breed through our conversations here in the forum, maybe it would also work for her...let her read the good things about pits...
last thing, i find pitbulls cuter than labs (of course i own pits only so im biased)...they have a much better temperament too...its the only dog(and ive had several other breeds before)that i was able to get in the cage with, with all her newly born puppies...she never growled at me...

WHAT??? ever thought of a Staffordshire Bull Terrier?I own two and they are probably the cutest dogs in the world and they have a "smile" to melt even your girlfriends heart
plus they are extremely affectionate and very, very clever they dont grow too big and they dont lose a lot of hair and they dont drool ....sorry don't get me started I just LOVE my dogs and I think everyone should have one!!(only kidding)take a look into the breed and show your girlfriend some piccies and see what you think......K.

thanks for your reply Jigger. one's definition of cute is such an objective thing, i think it is almost visceral and no amount of objective reasoning can be counted on to change it. i am with you as far as looks and temperament of the pit breed goes. i think it is a matter of finding a breed that satifies her criteria (cuddly good looks) and mine (pit like temperament).

yup...already been down that road K. unfortunately, while my GF shares a first initial with you (K), she does not share your love for the staffordshire - thinks it is too 'muscular'. again, 'cuteness' is just so arbitrary. B.

i guess if i were you ill just bring home a pit pup...then ill show it to her...i dont think she would reject the puppy...a puppy's a puppy you know...itll always be cute no matter what...maybe by the time it develops those muscles, she'd be deeply in love with it...

I guess I will use the assumption when you say Bull Terrier you are talking about the APBT and not the actual bull terrier?
Pit Bull puppies are the CUTEST puppies. Take your girlfriend to a kennel specializing in APBTs (gamebred would be the smartest thing to do!) Let her see some pups. She'll fall in love! And I almost guarantee a pup will come straight to her and make her want to take him home. Also, show her some pictures of adult APBTs. They are BEAUTIFUL dogs. Tell her you wont clip the ears.

So sorry your GF does not like the appearance of Staffy's mine were sooooo cute as pups but must admit to plenty of muscle now! especially in the male!!,she probably won't go for my next choice either... a St.Bernard LOADS of fur & slobber but I don't care I get to collect mine at the end of the month (can't wait)...I agree with the previous post about going to see some Pit pups my heart melts at the sight of them but I cannot have one due to where I live (sob sob) all you Pit lovers out there give 'em a hug from me!!!........take your GF to see some and maybe her mind will change and remember plenty of research and forward planning will make sure all goes well with whatever new pup you take on...all the best .....K.

thanks everyone for your input. i actually like the suggestion that i try to get a puppy in front of her and see how that works. i think once someone takes a liking to a pup, he/she is gonna like that dog for good. in the end, i may also take jigger's recommendation. -> one final question, from my research so far, it doesn't seem there is a real difference in temperament between a bull terrier - apbt - staffordshire bt. (i.e., all loyal, loving, fearless, and aggressive with *strange* dogs) can anyone confirm to what degree this is true?
thanks! B

I would not say my two were fearless as they were scared silly by a garden pond pump earlier today(LOL)and as for the aggressive with other dogs problem it just isn't true!! my two have no aggressive tendencies and are good mates with a friends crazy black Lab they walk with her quite a lot and go to each others gardens to play and have even eaten out of the same bowl!!
I go bike riding with my dogs( I ride the bike not them!!LOL)every day and they run loose by my side and we encounter all sorts of dogs on the way and not one of them causes any problem.. we see a weimararner three alsations two pomeranians two fox terriers a berner senner a yellow lab and sometimes another staffy and we sail past all these dogs just enjoying our run........remember there are NO bad dogs out there just bad owners and poor training...if you train your dog correctly in the very beginning you will have no dog aggression problems.......good luck.....K.

i cant agree more with the last reply...dogs vary in their behavior as much as people does with their own kind...of course we are led to misconceptions because most of the owners train their dogs to be agressive to other dogs...my pit was trained not to be agressive with other dogs since it was a pup...and she up to now she hasnt bitten a single dog(even if she was bitten herself by a lab)...but one time i made a mistake of letting her loose in our farm, she saw our two carabaos(water buffalos...its called carabaos here in the philippines)and attacked them without warning, i thought she was going to die, she hurled up in the air, around 8 ft high, but she never stopped from attacking (talk about gameness), good thing my sis was able to get her...
but even with that experience i still feel that pitbulls are one of the sweetest if not the sweetest breed one can ever own...i was hoping i cud post a pic of my pit being hugged by a child...that would surely melt your gf's heart...ow, you can see at http://www.dog-tracker.com, it is in the forum under britney's pics(that's my dog's name).try to show that maybe shell change her mind...

Why not take the GF to visit a litter of miniature Bull Terriers (I am guessing you mean this breed not the every varying pitbull) - pups are cute and people get real used to theirs being cute by the time it grows up.
