ear cropping of pitbulls

Our "oh-so-braveP and "oh-so-caring" fighting pit bull owner would have us believe that he really cares about his dogs.
He would also have us believe that it is not cruel because they get "really good medical attention."

NO caring person would put their dog in harm's way or justify it by saying it got good medical attention and therefore allowing it to hurt and be hurt was not cruel.

Dog fighting is for those too cowardly to fight themselves.

They let a dog do it for them.

Dog fighting is cruel and irresponsible. You simply can't justify it.

Humans are the only animals that fight and kill for "sport". And those same "sporting" people have created a dog that will fight and kill for "sport". It is not a natural state. It is up to us to put a stop to the senseless violence we have bred into the dogs.

Excuse #1 - "My pit bulls love to fight"
And some dogs LOVE to eat cat poop! And a cigarette smoker LOVES to smoke! And I LOVE to eat gummi worms until I'm sick. Just because you "love" to do something doesn't mean it's good or healthy. It doesn't mean there aren't good alternatives. It's up to you to provide your dog with a healthier, nonviolent alternative.

None of my pit bulls are missing anything by playing ball together instead of sinking their teeth into each other. They are as happy as they could be, without having to be violent. And yes, like another person here said, if they choose to get in a quarrel, it only takes a word from me to make them stop. If you train your dog and make sure it knows what you expect, then you will have no problems preventing dog fights.

Excuse #2 - "The dogs are provided with great medical attention after a fight"
Having good medical attention is NOT a reason to purposefully inflict injury! How many parents intentionally stab their children "because good medical attention is available"? Dogs, like young children, do not have the faculty to choose whether they would rather fight another dog, or play ball instead. They just do whatever they are used to doing.

Excuse #3 - "Gameness is the most important quality of a pit bull and you must fight them to determine gameness."
Testing for "gameness" is a stupid excuse to fight dogs. If you define "gameness" as never giving up despite the odds, then you could easily use weight-pulling or springpole hanging as a perfect test! The only time you have to fight dogs to test "gameness" is when you define gameness as willingness to fight another dog to the death!

Well, gee, I'd LOVE to have a dog like that. It really boosts my ego to be able to say "My dog will kick your dog's ass." (SARCASM)

Excuse #4 - "My pit dogs are taken care of and fed better than many pet dogs."
This simply points out that there are some dogs out there who are neglected, underfed, ignored, beaten, and abused. How the hell does that justify dog fighting?!?! Just because the fighting dog is fed and loved doesn't mean it's taken care of.

My dogs are fed the BEST food, given quality exercise, taken to the vet whenever necessary, sleep in our bedroom, have puzzles to expand their minds and keep them busy, and go to dog classes on a regular basis (primarily obedience and agility). They never hurt each other(on purpose), they are obedient, and they are always happy. Now - tell me how a dogfighter could possibly take better care of their dogs. The single fact that you are encouraging your dogs to injure (and be injured) is proof enough that you are a miserable caretaker.

Excuse #5 - "Dog fighting is an old sport that was once respectable."
Just because something's been around a long time doesn't make it right. Hence the end of "sports" like bearbaiting, buffalo slaughters, public hangings and beheadings, lion fights, Roman gladiators, etc. Civilized people now realize how unjust and cruel these "sports" were.

MEANWHILE... It is a FACT that dog fighting is illegal. It is a FACT that pit bulls are seriously injured and killed in dog fights. It is a FACT that dog fighting is now much less likely to involve upper class gentlemen and cared-for dogs, and much more likely to involve a group of bored, vicious hoodlums, a stolen pet, human-aggressive dogs, and/or the horribly painful death of one or more of the dogs. It is a FACT that most people do not understand the difference between dog-aggressive dogs and human-aggressive dogs and tend to lump them all into the same boat, thus making all pit bulls into baby-killers.

Conclusion:
DOG FIGHTING IS CRUEL AND UNNECESSARY. There is not a single justfiable good and many unnecessary evils that come out of dogfighting.

What kind of human allows his dog to be hurt for money?

I think that Sarge and the others of his no-class, no-heart, no-brain group will not have the guts to respond...but if they do....I challenge them:

Why don't you tell us about the sick ways pit bulls are trained to fight?

Why don't you tell us why you think actions that involve injury to dogs is a "sport"?

Why don't you explain why you get your jollies out of watching dogs hurting and being hurt.....so you can pump up your ego and add$$$$ to your pocket?

Why don't you crawl out from under what damp and dark rock you hide under and have the cojones to explain the above to us? I mean a REAL explanation...not the semi-literate ignorant ramblings that you last used when asked why you wanted to breed your pit.

I got my males clipped... He didn't seem to be in ANY pain. He was running around and going crazy when he still had the stitches in. Pit Bulls have a VERY high threshold for pain. It is all a matter of opinion, and how you think it looks. Back in the old days they clipped Pit's ears for fighting purposes. Now it is just for looks.

When my dog Tessa got hit by a car and broke her leg in 10 different places she too "didn't seem to be in any pain" and was "running around and going crazy" while she had a metal pin in her leg. Does this mean she wasn't hurt? Just because a dog doesn't appear to be in pain doesn't mean it isn't secretly hurting. Alot of dogs just put on a brave face :x

Ears are cropped on fighting dogs to reduce damage when in a fight, ears are easy to grab and bleed heavily when damaged. My understanding is real pitbull loving people do not crop their dogs.
Cropping is no big deal as some think it is - the dogs are not concious when its done anymore than when they are spayed or neutered. Proper after care means minimal pain (if any) and so far in 30 years I've not see any problems come from the procedure if the dog is properly cared for.
However pups normally are cropped at 6-12 weeks (responsible breeders do it BEFORE the pups leave home and make sure ears are healed and standing) so these are just past the time when its worth bothering to do it at all.
Drop ear dogs need better attention to ear cleaning so thats a procedure worth learning for the owner of these pups.

Cropping pitbulls ears is accepted in the breed. I don't think it has much to do with fighting them at all. Boxers that have their ears cropped are accepted also and I never heard of anyone fighting a boxer.

I do not have a pit bull and hopefully some day will get the chance to get one. I totally do not agree with dog fighting.. no matter how "natural" some idodiot people might say that it is. Croping is the owners choice. It does not hurt the dog. My uncle is a vet and I go to the clinic to help and have seen many dogs come in to get their ears done. There is no pain involved. They knock the dogs completely out. Once again it IS the OWNERS own CHOICE. I personally love the look and am going to get a dobie in a few years and will only buy one with its ears done because its my choice and I like the look.

As for this big agrument lay off of sashagirl.. she loves her dogs and so do all of us here. So gizmo I will let you take over.. do your lalalalalala hahahahaha look at the pic thing then we will all be happy.

well see i like body peircings and i have them. It hurts me but i like the look. So the outcome after the pain, i have what i think looks good and like.

Okay, but that was YOUR CHOICE. The dog shouldn't be FORCED to have his ears cropped. If given the choice, I bet he wouldn't have his ears BUTCHERED OFF.

ei thanks for the input...i guess i would go for the umcropped ears...i think its better for the dogs...God wouldnt have created them in such a way if it didnt have a purpose at all...
anyway with pitfighting, ive seen pitbulls whose ears werent cropped win over those who are cropped...ironically the uncropped one got a hold of the other ones ear (the base of it)..and it didnt let go of it up to the end of the fight...now thats what you call locked jaws...

Hey DUMBASS dog fighting is against the law! You are NOT a dog lover if you watch or participate in fights. You are in it for the money and you have NO business on this forum.

Just a few comments of my own...I understand where everyone is coming from regarding the ear cropping bit. When we got our 2nd Pit, my boyfriend wanted to crop her ears and I didn't because I thought it was cruel. But,then I realized that an ear cropping is just like any surgery we get. They don't feel anything while it's being done. Also, someone had said that the dog didn't choose to have his/her ears butchered off. But do you know what... a neutered dog didn't ask to have his jewels chopped off either!! It's the same thing. Also, I don't believe that ear cropping is done to make a Pit (or any other dog, for that matter) look agressive. I've read that it is to make them look alert. No one runs from either or my pits...they run TO them. It's very suprising to me how a lot have people have to come to love and accept the APBT regardless of their history. To me, it's the best breed of dog available.
