I agree, so many breeds are ending up in rescues because those who breed them are doing it for financial reward, they dont care where there pups end up as long as they are getting something out of it. I cannot immagine the price they ask for either, especially Saint Bernards being a very large breed, and people who buy them should learn to do there homework first before considering having a dog, its ok seeing a litter of Pedigree puppies and thinking (awww there cute shall have one of those), without giving any thought to what is going to happen once the pup matures to adult, being that the dog is too big for the house or its too boisterous to handle (because it wasn't trained from a pup)etc. All it takes is common sense, that i know many dont have, otherwise there wouldn't be any bad breeders or owners.

What makes you think any of these dogs came from 'good breeders' or were sold to good homes? Or even if they did whether or not the owner was for some reason unwilling to return the dog to the breeder who would be happy to take it back? (I've had one pup dumped at a shelter -that called me!- despite all agreements simply because I crate my dogs overnight and the owner of the pup thought that was cruel - so much for a return agreement if the person sold to is not as trustworthy as you think.)
Things do happen in people's lives to force them to give up a pet. However, I have seldom found the initially stated reason was the real reason when a dog was being offered to a shelter, rescue or 'up for adoption' some other way.
I have here a purebred dog that sold for $2000 originally. Each home moved him along as he was 'too big' for them (it was an oversized toy breed pup from a pet store). I am owner number 9 and I got him at 6 months old! He wasn't too big but he was very active. He had bowel problems due to stress of trying to run the world as a baby and also from his poor diet. He was being starved by people who did not understand the vet's orders on a bland diet for the tummy problem. He learned he could bite anyone over food due and win due to that starvation problem. I'd say what was too big was both his personality and his mouth. (he got cured immediately here of all but the energy
There are tons of breeders who do a bad job, there are more who are just plain ignorant.
Most purebred dogs (according to AKC stats) are bred by people who do one or maybe two litters and then stop breeding. Yep thats right - pet owners - who were not well screened in the first place or they would never have gotten dogs to breed and who of course did no better job on finding homes for their pups than the breeder of their dogs did.
Its hard to find a good breeder and then the good breeders are NOT breeding very often so the pet public who are used to instant gratification on all whims goes and buys a cute pup at the mall or out of the newspaper ads or maybe if rescue is locally advertised enough and has convenient hours they adopt.

With all the good breeder's out there, there are still some that aren't doing a good job, otherwise none of these dogs would be up for adoption - they would either have found suitable, educated homes or would have been returned to their breeder per the contract agreement._snip
