THE TOP 10 REASONS FOR DOG RELINQUISHMENT

1. Moving (7%)
2. Landlord not allowing pet (6%)
3. Too many animals in household (4%)
4. Cost of pet maintenance (5%)
5. Owner having personal problems (4%)
6. Inadequate facilities (4%)
7. No homes available for litter mates (3%)
8. Having no time for pet (4%)
9. Pet illness(es) (4%)
10. Biting (3%)

Moving - IME usually means the dog has some behavior problem that makes it unwanted in new unchewed or unpeed upon surroundings or in a place where the neighbors don't already hate the owners because the dog barks or chases kids etc.
Landlord - IME means owner made a whim purchase and/or hoped they could fool the landlord about the dog being there.
Too many animals - IME owner wasn't thinking about the work involved when the dog was acquired.
Cost of pet - ditto on owner lack of planning.
Personal problems - or why every breeder should have a 100% returnability policy for the life of the dog IMO.
Inadequate facilities - what was that owner thinking again?
No home available for littermates - this is the bad breeder folks, the one who did not plan the litter, did not do what needed to be done to find good homes, and does not care what happens to the pups as long as they are gone!
No time for pet - two possibles owner not thinking or life change imposed upon owner from outside - you choose which is more common.
Pet illness - some pet owners cannot afford to care for their pets or treat serious illness - again what were they thinking when they got one?
Biting - bite inhibition training should be a part of every pup's upbringing but these owners had no idea how to train. (fdor anyone worried about this check out the books at http://www.superpuppy.com)
From this list I get 9 "its the owners" and 1 "its the breeder".
96% of surrendered dogs had no obedience training
Animals acquired from friends were the most likely to be surrendered.

Its so easy to blame the breeders otherwise pet owners who dump their pets would have to 'fess up as to where the problem really is.

So many dogs end up in rescue because people make the wrong choice, instead of researching the breed first they rush into it! People do not think what they are taking on, whether it be a small, medium, or large breed, all breeds are different in character
And it depends on the owner to sort there training out from puppyhood, never letting the dog rule the roost, this is when problems occure. Not all breeds suit people, some have not got the patience to own a child never mind a pet, but they never get rid of there own flesh and blood, so why a animal. It takes a lot of time, love, patience, and training to bring a puppy up to be happy and content. I own 3 dogs, plus 3 cats..they have all been bought up together so they get on really well, and one of my dogs is a male Bullmastiff, who I love dearly! the others are a male Westie cross, and they both get on great, and a female Border Collie cross. I would never part with them. I believe that if you are a true animal lover, you will do anything to make your pet happy, if not then you should go out and buy a toy one, that doesn't need looking after.
