Guest Anonymous Posted April 1, 2002 Posted April 1, 2002 I thought at one time that i heard that bread was not good for dogs and i was wondering if anyone had heard that also?if anyone has any info on why or wjy not could you please let me know,Thanks. Quote
Shannon_C Posted April 19, 2002 Posted April 19, 2002 Yes its true, the reason is, bread can expand in your dogs stomach causing blockage, (being dough) its even worse if they have a drink straight after. Bread is much safer when toasted. My dogs have a little bit of toast now and again, but I never give it them straight from the bag. Shannon Bullmastiff Owner, Researcher and Lover of all animals. GizmoRedNosePit Posted June 15, 2002 Posted June 15, 2002 REALLY??? I have never heard that befor.....hmmm.....I guess it's toast for gizmo.... I tear up the bread and then put it in with rice and dog food.....so it absorbs water...is that ok??? Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted June 18, 2002 Posted June 18, 2002 I am just as shocked as you are at this my dogs favorite food is bread and she steals it from the bread bin. I wont be letting her near any bred in the future thanx 4 that. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted June 18, 2002 Posted June 18, 2002 some dogs are alright eating bread but others just can't handle it. my bull boxer McKenzie loves bread, but the min pin I used to have couldn't eat it it made her very very sick. I think it is more the smaller breeds that can't really handle it. Maybe it is according to the amount of bread and size of the dog? Quote

Well thats a new one :) Actually there are places in the world where bread is a common part of the dogs daily food and it was often a component of the food fed in this country back before dog kibble was popularized. I don't think raw dough would be particularly good but in all the years I have had dogs I've never seen or heard of one having a problem with bread - not even the ones fed an entire loaf by an amazed person who could not believe it went down the dog so fast or the one that stole the entire package of bagles and ate them wrapper and all plus a pound of butter to wash them down with! I don't think the dogs usually need the carbs though :D Plus I think if bread swelled inside the body we'd all be busy feeding it to the pigeons in the city to get rid of them :D and I bet we all know that doesn't work at all! Guest Anonymous Posted August 3, 2002 Posted August 3, 2002 I'd be worried about gastric torsion in breeds who are prone to it. I'd think that I'd be increasing their risk of bloat if I fed them bread (but then would you let them drink straight after? no)... but seeing as I have a dog who seems to have an iron stomach I'm not too well-equipped to comment. :) He also likes bread!! Guest Anonymous Posted September 2, 2002 Posted September 2, 2002 My husband fed our puppy pizza crust. :( She loved it at the time, but got poots from h!*# later! :o Do Rhodesian Ridgebacks get bloat? Please explain how to avoid it. Is it a problem in all large breeds? Somebody please educate me. Quote
