Your dog's quirks..

I'm doing some research on the behaviour of dogs for a children's book I'm writing and would greatly appreciate your input if your dog has any strange habits or quirks (for example my 4yo Golden Retriever likes to chew his teddies or bones whilst on his back using his paws as hands to hold the object in his mouth, also if no-one has paid any attention to him in a while he looks at you whilst making little whining noises to attract your attention)
Anything like this would be useful.

Thanks

Storm will grab his stuffed toys, run a lap from the living room, through the dining room, to the kitchen and back, throw the toy down on the floor, roll over on his back and play with it like that, all the while he acts like he is trying to rub his scent on it. He also will do this cute thing with his paws and eyes, he rubs his eyes with his paws - cute, but also means his retinas are swollen and he needs some meds.

My dog Kayla is senile and will bark randomly at nothing. She will be sleeping and all of a sudden jump up barking, my other two look at her like she's nuts. She also growls while she is being pet - go figure that one out! Something new, she's going to be 14 this year, so somethings are coming and going with age.

Hope this helps give your characters some crazy personality.

Charlie my 2 yr old male Bullmastiff likes going out for rides in the car with the window open,(although its only a gap) and when ever it rains, he puts his nose out and tries catching it, i dont know what the passers by think when they see him, but some do have a chuckle!

Well I'm pretty sure its an accident, but Puppy will knock into the wire babygate thing that is in front of rooms hes not allowed into, and when they fall over he gets absaloutly terrified. :o He doesn't do it on purpose I guess, but hes done it like 5 times in 4 days...

That's a cute idea!

Well, this is what my little Gizmo (4lb Yorkie) does...

1. When he eats, he fills his mouth with with 5 or 6 pebbles. Then he runs over to the living room carpet, drops all the pebbles and eats them one by one. He does this a few times before he gets full.

2. When I'm sleeping, he knows that if he licks my nose I'll move my head. When he wants to get under the covers (yeah, he sleeps with me :)), he licks my nose so I can move my head to then slip under the covers.

Let me know when the book comes out :)

My dog Buck is kind of funny. When we go for walks in the woods he'll wade in this creek near my house. The creek isn't very deep, it probably only goes about halfway up his legs, but as soon as he gets out of the creek, he shakes himself off like he's drenched! It cracks me up!!

Another funny thing Buck does, is ever since I taught him to roll over he does it whenever I tell him to lay down! I say "Buck, down" and he lays down, rolls over and stays down. It's cute. :-)

One more thing: Buck thinks he is a great hunter. Mostly, all he finds are dead things, but he thinks he is really great. The other day we were on a walk and he walked right past this little garden snake without even stopping. I saw it though and picked it up to show it to him. He sniffed it, started crying and ran away! He is so funny :D

my dog likes to hide his treats everywhere....and he leaves them there for weeks....then when he wants one, he goes and gets it

Freebee thinks she is "top dog" over the other one. If they are outside and I call them, and Laurel doesnt come back immediately, she goes out, grabs her by the collar and basically drags her back...but SHE will come back when she damn well pleases!!!

After Kai and Kaedyn get dinner (which are usually bones), they both start pawing at their faces and cleaning themselves. Then kai likes to roll on his back and move around on his back a bit.

Zebra has this "problem" ...every time I sit down to eat, and I mean EVERY time....Zebra has to go poo. Which means I have to take him out...while my food is sitting there getting cold. and after he goes he comes inside and begs for food...like he "made room" to eat more or something.  . And if anyone else is eating he puts his head under there arm right as they have a big spoonfull or forkfull of something and he jerks his head up as hard as he can so the person drops whatever they are eating on the floor so he can get it...

if you give mimi a potato chip, she will lick it untill its mushy then leave it there.

she also does that weird kibble thing, grabs a few and tosses them on the floor then eats them one at a time.

she will whine for a treat, only to bury it in her bed OR MINE! over and over again like its a game lol

she has this squeaker toy that has the squeakers at each end, and if you put it under a blanket and squeez them at the same time it sounds like its crying so she franticly digs then grabs it and lays on it like shes feeding babies and it turns into this huge game every time lmao this always cracks me up

if you say "daddys home" she runs to the door, and if i say it just to trick her :o , she will drag the mat away from the door and "fight me for it" hahahah

when we are in the house, and i say "get it.. go get it" she grabs a toy..
if i say it outside, she digs a hole lmao

she always sleeps behind my knees

and when im in one of my depressed moods, she just kinda knows,
she doesnt even play.. just follows me around looking at me all day
i think its more sweet then quirky tho lol

Rowie's the weirdest dog ever!
Sometimes we'll be sitting watching TV or whatever, she'll suddenly prick up her ears, and bark! After 5 minutes she'll sit down again, satisfied with herself. :o

Our previous doggie used to do "zoomies" around the garden whenever someone used to come over. She'd go to the visitor, bark, then run around the garden 3, 4, 5, 6 times! Then she would come and sit by the visitor!

Rowie will sometimes be running around the garden really fast, then suddenly stop, and sit down. :o

She likes to lick between my toes.

When I am having a bath and she is inside, she will just stare and stare at me. Then when I come out, she sniffs me, then licks all the water off my legs! (Loads of dogs do this).

When Rowie was younger, she would be FULL of energy one second, and the next she would be sleeping! (Common in puppies)

I don't know why I bothered writing all this as the thread began in Feb 2002! :o But it's fun just to share! :D

When I give my housedog a treat she will hide it then go to the place where she hid the first treat and eat it.
Also have a male with one "ball" and if you talk about it in front of him he lays down and covers his eyes with his paws.

My dog phoenix loves to sleep in my room, but I have to sleep on the side of the bed furthest from the wall so she won't jump onto my bed while I sleep. one night I remember having a wet thing rubbing on my neck and I rolled over. sometime during the night it got cold in my room and I reached behind me to pull the sheets closer. Instead of feeling sheets, I felt this big warm lump and looked over to see Phoenix rolled up in my sheets sleeping oh so peacefully. It was almost hard to force myself to wake her up until I noticed the great big drool mark she left on my pillows. :-?

My dogs do something i've heard lots of people complain thiers DON'T do: when I say, "look!" and point...they LOOK where I'm pointing.

Calliope drags her blanket wherever she wants to sit, (she picks it up in her mouth and it trails the ground between her legs as she looks for a comfy place to sit) and has a comfort toy--her squeaky ice cream sandwich. whenver thunder rolls, I know she goes to find it and move it wherever she's sleeping. recently, she decided to bunk in with Fang, and I knew how much she loved him when I found she had moved her ice cream sandwich, too.

Sandy paws at me to get me to pet her...actually, sandy does a lot of very human things...once, I was late coming home and she looked cross as she peered at my car from the window. I opend the front door, and there she was. I held out my arms and cooed to her. she gave me the same cross look, and pushed me out of the way as she went to releive herself in the yard. she wasn't having anything to do with me until she had cooled off.
Buddy bites the sleeves of my sweaters when i intend to leave him outside. He will hold on and I'll have to pry him off of me. If I move my arms back, he will fall flat out on his chest, his legs stretched out behind him, and use his front paws to wrap around my ankle, his muzzle pressed to my shoe. it's so hard to leave him when he does that!
when Gypsy wants to go with me, she will follow me, and whenever I pick up my foot to take a step, she will wrap her front legs around my ankle from behind, so that I'm almost kicking her in the chest with my heel. again, very hard to say "no" when they're hangin on your leg. she also claps her paws when she wants me to put her down.
india claps when she wants food, she LOOOVES to sneak up on people (especially people who were not friendly to her before) and nip them on their calves, then run like the wind. she can also trick me into looking up at the ceiling
fang...squeaks puppies. he runs at them so that they fall over onto thier backs, then places both big paws (one atop the other) on thier tummies. then he puts his nose down onto his paws. then he presses on them until they make a squeaking sound. he jumps back, looking absolutely delighted. I have never heard of another dog "squeaking" puppies.

Where to begin...
My Rottweiler is notorious for licking all the slober from my 4 Newfoundlands flews...she doesnt miss a drop...it really grosses me out when the drool is just about hitting the floor and its cold...she will grab it and come over to me and flings it at me... very gross, at least I never have to worry about her becoming dehydrated
My Rottie will also get big rocks and push them around with her nose while growling...the Rottie grumble I should say...she flips them around for hours! also when out walking in the woods she will tear branches off trees! (branches from young sapplings which I could not even tear off! :o ) then if you are unfortunate enough to be in front of her when she tears it off and comes running with it...very proud of herself.......you can mistakenly get it shoved up into not very comfortable parts of your body...this happened to a friend of mine who came out for a walk with us...she vows she will never come out again as it is too dangerous! :o
My Rottie also comes to work with me most days...she is the smallest of all my dogs and is much more convenient to take every where...when I stop to get my Coffee and bagel in the morning she will wait until the very last of the bagel is gone then she daintly takes the empty wrapper with the excess butter still on it and take it into the back of my truck and lick it...she has never once misjudged and taken it when there is still a peice of bagel in the wrapping and I leave it on my passenger seat the whole time I am eating it. My Rottie also has a horrible problem of trying to push in between peoples legs...she has caught a few people off guard a few times...she will stand underneath the person to receive undivided attention...its especially bad when she misjudges and tries this on people who are not tall enough for her!
My youngest female Newf. Tori and my older female Newf are cling on's...I can't even go to the bathroom in peace...when I come out those 2 are sitting there waiting for me..Tori will also grab onto the other dogs leashes and if I let go she will take them for a walk around the yard...my youngest Newf. has also been taught some very bad behavior from my Rottie...any thing my Rottie does she imitates..from stalking and attacking the other dogs in play to trying to push rocks with her nose.
I could go on, but, I don't want to bore every one!
