Guest Anonymous Posted February 19, 2002 Posted February 19, 2002 I have a 10 month old border collie bitch who is missing her "mates" ie a burmese cat and two grown up off spring all who have left home very recently. I am about to a take up a full time position again and although she will still get lots and lots of exercise as I am a fitness freak! I am wondering if another border collie mate will keep her amused and entertained? I would be grateful for any feedback from people who have two border collies (pets not working dogs) thanks Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted February 20, 2002 Posted February 20, 2002 I have a BC, a Malamute Mix AND an Aussie Shep. I get the impression you do still excercise your girl at night right? Thats a key to alleviating frustration for her. These are working dogs in every way and none more so than Borders who are the k9 worlds work-a-holics. Just an hour of jogging, bike riding, playing fetch, etc a day is critical to their overall happiness. Now, specifically, YES, having a second dog does help. In no way can this be confused with replacing the time and play with you, but it does help. Word of warning though. A second dog essentially DOUBLES that amount of time and effort on your part too. Now, BOTH dogs need individual time with you. Both will need their training and play times. both will need seperate feeding bowls and maybe even times or places. So its a double sided issue. Oh, dont forget SPACE. I recently moved and no longer have 100s of acres for the kids to play on, this means morning and evening EXTENDED walks and excercise... for EACH. It's almost a full time job in itself haha Good Luck! Shannon_C Posted April 21, 2002 Posted April 21, 2002 Hi there. I own a 6 year old Border Collie cross who was supposedly have been a Springer Spaniel, she grew up to look like a Collie instead, but she is a lovely girl and loopy with it lol. Penny is always hyper even when she as had her long walks twice a day and plenty of play in the garden. I cannot find anything that will tire her out lol. As you might know Border Collies are working dogs and they are always on the go, no matter what you try to do.....to be honest with you having another dog will keep your Collie company, but it will not slow him/her down. I have a 13 year old Westie and a 2 year old Bullmastiff, but these dont slow Penny down lol. Shannon Quote
