Guest Anonymous Posted August 8, 2001 Posted August 8, 2001 Is this a common mix and if so why have I not found anyone that has this mix... I am getting one very soon and was just wondering if the two breeds mixed is a good combination. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted August 9, 2001 Posted August 9, 2001 Hi Ethical Breeders will not cross breed dogs. However you might have luck finding a dog like this at a shelter or even by JRT rescue, hard to say what any dog will turn out like, each has their own unique personality and it depends on the upbringing for the most part. Guest Anonymous Posted August 9, 2001 Posted August 9, 2001 what do you mean 'ethical breeders will not cross breed dogs?' almost all surviving breeds exist through the crossbreeding and mixing of different types of dogs the only reason one needs a purebred is for showing and breeding, and you shouldn't breed as there are currently too many dogs and not enough homes for them mix breeds are usually healthier in terms of genetic diseases because breeding select dogs multiple times gives a stronger chance of getting genes for genetic disease and health problems Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted August 9, 2001 Posted August 9, 2001 Of course all standard breeds came into existance from dogs mixed long ago. Ethical breeders do not cross breed to make "new" breeds, however, do cross lines. There is a code of ethics that should be followed. By ethical breeders I mean those who are responsible, NOT puppy millers pumping out the puppies or BYB breeding for profit, but those breeding for the love of the breed and breeding only health tested dogs, who are champions, and have a list of people waiting for one of their pups, and have their pups on spay/neutering contracts, to lessen the chance of more dogs being bred. There is nothing wrong with wanting a purebred dog. One does not have to show or breed to want to own a purebred dog, just simply like myself not "need" one just love the breed. There is nothing wrong with mix breeds they are just not for me right now. I prefer to purchase purebred dogs from ethical responsible breeders or from my breed rescue. Where do you think most of the dogs that over-populate our shelters, rescue, and streets came from? Irresponsible unethical breeders, and people just breeding two dogs "cause Fluffy and Buffy are cute" and they want to keep a puppy and didn't expect to get 12 so they dump them off somewhere etc etc. As far as mixed breeds being healthier, there is no proof of that and too many external factors like feeding, general health, amount of exercise, environment and pollutants, to determine if this is true. No 100% correct studies have been done, just opinions given, nearly impossible to prove given the external factors. So do not tell me I shouldn't breed, because I am not one of the ones contributing to the problem, I own purebred dogs and rescue dogs and I always refer people to rescue and to shelters before refering breeders. Guest Anonymous Posted August 9, 2001 Posted August 9, 2001 i'm not against purebred dogs, i have one myself who is extremely wonderful and healthy but it's not 'unethical' to breed mutts if you are responsible in raising them, finding homes and giving them proper medical treatment. just as there are ethical and unethical purebred breeders, there are both breeding mix dogs as for healthier, it is a fact that when you breed within a certain population with little variation to genes and characteristics (not inbreeding) in order to make a dog to fit certain standards you run the risk of breeding to heterozygous animals and having the offspring inherit a recessive trait you were unaware your dog carried. it is true that many health risks are a result of atmosphere, exercise, diet, and other variables , there are also many that are genetic such as hip dysplasia and certain cancers. and i'm not trying to say you're an irresponsible breeder i'm saying that there are benifits of having and breeding mixed breeds just as there are purebreds. Guest Anonymous Posted August 9, 2001 Posted August 9, 2001 i wouldn't imagine it to be rare, but most breeders breed purebreds because then other breeders and showers pay more money Quote
