  1. I am going to call her and see if I can bring her the dog training lessons that I used for Kaleb. They are very good for puppies...all positive method...(not that I am against correction but just not with a puppy and not until they learn the basics.) --------------------------- Well I called my niece and made arrangements to come help her train her pup. (I know that it is still VERY young but I would rather give her much needed advice NOW rather than waiting for her to beat the dog to death.) I asked her if I could use her and her pup for training experience...instead of saying "You are gonna kill that dog!!" which is what I feel. Oh well, maybe I take her a couple of good dog books too. A couple come to mind. Thanks for listening and any other suggestions would be much appreciated.
  2. My adult niece had a nice registered boxer female that she decided she did not want anymore. She brought the boxer over to my elderly parents house and dumped her on my Mom and Dad. The dog was 40 pounds TOPS, nothing but skin and bones. The dog had breathing problems, had NO training, had never been to the vet, had not been spayed, and had spent it's whole life in a 6X10 kennel. It had no idea what the outside world was. It had no manners or anything. So, yesterday I went to my parents house to visit for fathers day....They told me that the same niece had gotten a Rat Terrier puppy. I am sooo ill. I remember over Christmas my niece was saying that she wanted a puppy, (maybe a sheltie) a calm smaller dog that did not eat much. A CALM Rat Terrier!?! You have got to be kidding. My niece knows NOTHING about dogs or training. I would really like to be able to help her with training her dog, but do not want to come off as pushy or "my way is the right way" attitude. I also do not want to see/hear that she has given the dog away because she has not trained the dog. The last thing my Mom told me was that my niece had "whipped" the pup for crying/whining. He is 8 weeks old and she has had him for 2 days.
  3. The shepherd would not be an inside dog...She would be outside in a kennel run. However, I would like for her to be able to interact with my akita. She was kenneled with a german shepherd at the pound and they got along great. So, I don't think that she is dog aggressive perse', but aggressive towards new people, children, and also fear aggressive.
  4. I have the chance to take a aggressive austrailian shepherd from our local animal shelter to try to train/rehabilitate her. I am looking for more experience, and I know that this is a great thing to do to gain experience. In addition, I might actually be able to rehab this girl enough to get her adopted. My problem is, I have not worked with aggressive dogs, and I have not worked with austrailian shepherds (ie, I don't know their temprement other than being atandoffish toward strangers). I am used to my stubborn and bull headed akitas...And I am almost afraid that I will be too harsh because I am used to the constant stubborness of my pooch. I need advice, information, support, etc. Thank you guys for everything.
  5. I have one dog, (but am looking to take a foster or two to train :-? ) Kaleb Akita 9 months old
  6. :o And to think that a local groomer told me to use TIDE to bathe stinky dogs.
  7. Shady -- I am terribly sorry for your loss. I am sure that it was very tramatic for you. I would definitely have the owner of the dog to pay for the loss of your goat. I know that this will not come near replacing your pet, but maybe it will make the owner of the pit find a better way to contain his dog. Laduendas -- Goats are notoriously bad healers....A superficial wound can kill a goat because their immune system is not as strong as say a horse or cow. They develop infection very quickly and the infection will progress to the point that the animal will become septic and die. Taking the animal to the vet may have prolonged the death, but no necessarily stopped it. Even with iv antibiotics, the poor goat would have probably not lived.

    Trainers

Our trainer has shown (and has titles) in obedience, conformation, herding, tracking, Schutzhund, and agility. I went with her 1.) because she has a great reputation here in my little town, 2.) she is really not all that expensive and 3.) I liked her with I first talked with her....I like her style. I don't think that it would have mattered to me if she had not shown....BUT I was more interested in her experience with large breed aggressive dogs, particularly akitas. I like her and her training style so much that I an apprenticing her. She is a great lady and a awesome trainer.
  9. I have a 6 1/2 month akita puppy. I have taken him to work with me since the day I got him. I wanted him to learn how to behave from the start. I am always conscious of other people's feelings and try to avoid complaints at all costs. It is easy for me because my office has it's own outside door. Therefore, people hardly see me coming and going unless they see me outside. I am very particular about doggie odor/cleanliness. I pick up after him daily. So far, there have been no complaints. If we receive a compaint I will deal with it. I don't know much about the benefits of having a dog at work, but as long as you leave people nothing to complain about, you should be ok. However, there are always going to be bitter, unhappy people looking to cause trouble for you. Check out this months Dog World....I think there is an article about taking your dog to work inside it. Also, go to a search engine and search for "pets in the workplace".
  10. DogPaddle -- I just want to say I LOVE YOUT AVATAR! I am not usually a fan of Border Collies, but WOW what a great looking dog!
  11. HOLY COW what a smart dog!! :o
  12. Kaleb has lifted his leg maybe 3 times in his life....All three times after a trip to the dog park. But of course he is still young....6 months old, but neutered a 4.5 months.

    Smelly Ears

I wash Kalebs ears out with ear wash from DermaPet. It smells like peach and has lubricating and drying agents to clean and keep bacterial growth down.
  14. Kaleb foams at the mouth, but usually it is when he is waiting for a cookie!

    CGS Test

    WOW Congradulations!! :D
  16. According to a couple of other boards that I frequent, this is supposed to be the absolute best food ever. I found the price laughable....60$ for a 40 pound bag. My husband would DIE! I personally do not think that it sounds all that great. i have a problem with the egg product and potato product. I like specifics, not generalities.
  17. OOOOooo, I have never heard the red pepper idea but I will do that for some of my neighbor dog problems! That is a very good one. ...For the peeing on the post I had thought maybe a strategically placed electric fence. :evilbat: But I am sure that the red pepper is more politically correct!
  18. I only like my dog, and my cats. (just kidding mostly) I cannot stand the neighbors 10-15 dogs because they case/kill my ducks and cats, and they tear up the trash on a daily basis. However, dogs that are well behaved I like. Yappy jumpy bossy dogs I can definitely do without. I still only like my cats because I am allergic to everyone elses...go figure.
  19. I might have a faux bear rug for sale. The jury is still out on that one. :-?
  20. I just realized that I misspelled the title  Man do I need new glasses.

    Supplements

I feed kibble and supplement it with Nupro. Since feeding it, he doe not smell as doggy, he does not have gas, he looks wonderful and does not shed. I am really glad I decided to use it!
  24. The worst bite that I have ever received was from a golden/lab mixed dog. He bit me 5 times before I knew what hit me. Not little nips either, but big deep bites that bled for a week.
  25. Thanks man! 8)
