Great advice Mei-Mei! Perhaps at a moment she isn't yelling, you might try "confiding" in her about your irritation that people aren't picking up. She may be bored and lonely and might like a friend to chat with.

Well you'll hear all sorts of things about any breed. Learn to judge for yourself. Look at the source. I personally have never known a bitey Dal. I lived with one for a while and she was sweet, very good with strangers. All the ones at the dog park are nice. I told you before, my opinions on Dals. They are an active breed and can be a little stubborn about training. They are smart and can get mischievious and upset if bored, neglected, etc. Just do your research and make sure it's really the breed for you, learn how to find a good breeder or go through a rescue. They often know a lot about each dog and can help you find the right one for you.

It's the same way with kids. I mean, our family is planning to breed our neice when she has her first period. She's a lovely child, smart, well-behaved. But for some odd reason people think we shouldn't breed her so young and some people are against breeding her at all. But what is so wrong, if she is going into heat, then she's ready, right? Why wait until she's 18, such an arbitrary age? We already know she's breeding quality.
Will you be seeking an outside male? .... or breeding her to her father or brother? :o
Definately outside male, but I want to make sure to cross the traits so we only get good ones. Let's hope she throws the good genes and not the bad LOL. I agree with you Yellowlabs, I think only goods and excellents should be bred. Parker's mom is good, with strong well-tested hips, and Dad is excellent and I still worry!

I think she's having a hard time with one of her dogs right now, who is very sick. So send happy strong thoughts her way! :)

I'd do that too, but I usually don't see the perpetrators. Yesterday on our hike through this trail by our house, there was this huge dog crap midway and I kept wanting to announce to people we passed that the dog crap was not ours LOL!

The over-the-counter remedies do not work for all kinds of worms. Also it's good to get the puppy checked out at the vet. There are some things that are good. Garlic is great, add a little fresh garlic to each meal. Also add 1 tablespoon raw grated carrot or beet to each meal. You can give wheat or oat bran as well. These things are all irritating to the worms. A short fast (not a full day for a puppy) on liquids (chicken broth, water) will kill some worms. They get food from the pup, and if the pup has no food...neither do they. Other remedies like wormseed or pumpkin seeds or diatomaceous earth are more lengthy and involved and won't help for just a few days before you go get wormed.

Ooh ooh! I think I know the answer!!! It's Samre!

You've already been given great advice. I'm just venting. I get sooo mad at people that don't pick up. Our park and our trails around here, well I always pick up, but some people don't. Then I always want to tell everyone I see that that is not "our" poop LOL.

Oh Trinity, I'm so sorry to hear about that! It's just terrible. You want to think people are good, but then...people like that. I don't have a lot of advice. I don't breed and I could never do such a thing to Parker's breeder. Although she might be happy to get rid of me LOL I ask sooo many questions. I suppose you could hire a PI and hunt them down, if you were willing to take the dog back for breach of contract and take them to court. How long has it been since they've moved? Oh, one thing that might save you some time in the future (although I know you hope never to be in a similar situation) is having the dogs registered to you as well. Parker's tattoo is registered with both my info and his breeders; if he were ever lost, both of us would be notified.
What an IDIOT. What I want to know is if that puppy "Black Magic" is only 10 months old in that pucture, Why are her "boobs" so big??? Did she breed that puppy?
WHOA! I just went and looked (http://www.filabrasileirodogs.com/filas/black_magic_do_guardian.htm) and that little girl does look like she's been bred to my untrained eye. Someone said maybe it's from her heat cycle, but I have never seen such enlarged breasts on a dog from a heat! Is that possible?

I'm really impressed with the Natural Balance. It's a really good price, and I know quite a few dogs who are doing great on it. My cats eat the kitty line and are looking great. If I were ever to need to feed kibble, this would be the one!

Well the real problem here is...stupid people should not own dogs. Especially intact dogs. Especially intact difficult dogs. And now she has made more. How wonderful. I think Filas should be called protective, rather than aggressive. They are a breed that needs socialization and discipline, as well as a watchful owner (unlike this lady) but to say aggressive...well that has such terrible undertones, like they are supposed to run around attacking everyone.

Interesting. So what's with all these new breeds having "tm"? I mean, real breeds aren't trademarked...what's the deal? If I breed my Yorkie and my Poodle (this is a supposition, I don't have either dog and don't breed) are the Yorkipoo "TM" people gonna come down on me for trademark infringement?
-
How does this breed differ than the "regular" pug? Which is the one I see more often? I see a lot of pugs, just never knew there were now different kinds. Do you have a link to where I could see a pic of these pugs?
-
I never threw any stones at you, don't insinuate things. I have a right to voice my opinion, and that I did. I'm sure they are lovely dogs, and there are many lovely dogs out there of all sorts of genetic origins, BUT my point was I think more efforts should be put into fixing the overall global dog problems - overpopulation, bad breeding, dog food lies, etc - before you focus on designer pets. Now that's my opinion, and you have yours, and never shall the two meet.

My poor little baby is only 4 months now, and people already say those things! The poor guy. One thing I have found that works to say, when you can tell the people are interested in making money, is to be friendly and just gush about how you could never afford to get involved in breeding, there's just so much expense and time and energy involved.
-
Ah, another "custom" breed. Joy. Sorry that the majority on here don't agree with you, but as I see it, we need to take care of the breeds we have now before making new ones, if even then. Not we as in individuals, but as a society. We need to do away with BYBs and pet stores that sell pets, and people who fight dogs, etc etc. We've got enough on our plate as it is to deal with before focusing on inventing new breeds. I haven't called you anything. All I see is that you sure seem to like attention.

I totally agree! I hate when people get dogs from breeds or lines they can't handle, and then the dog is not trained right or given the amount of activity it needs. That's why you should research first, and be honest with yourself about your lifestyle. There are sooo many breeds I adore, but know that honestly they are not the best match for me.

I don't believe this has been addressed yet in this thread - I believe there are some medications and vaccines that cannot be given to wolf hybrids as well. So beyond all the other considerations, you would need to find a vet who knew specifically about wolves. I added that only for overall information; I do not believe in wolf-hybrids (er, having them or breeding them I mean, I know they exist LOL). It's interesting though, Bengals (cats) are part wild cat, and are quite different. I wonder if that is because only 3rd generations can be sold as true Bengals?

Thanks guys...I'm working that and other info into a nice verbal response for the jerks who have the gall to ask if I'm going to breed my baby. Regardless of the fact that breeding should never be undertaken so lightly, he's a BABY! I feel so dirty and violated when people suggest such a thing, looking right at him, you can see he's just an innocent happy-go-lucky little toddler. Some friends and I have considered making up a pamphlet to hand out, you wouldn't believe the things some people say.

Well I've been ignoring this post but of course, can only do so for so long before I open my big mouth. Now of course I doubt this person is coming back...troll? I don't know. I just have to say... Why would anyone want an attack dog? I don't understand why people want things in dogs or for their dogs that would never be logical or acceptable in other aspects of their life. Would anyone go to a car dealer and seek out a car that say, ignites other cars that come within a certain distance? How about an alarm system than unless you put in the right code, it decapitates people as they walk in to the house? These are just stupid inanimate objects, and yet, anyone can see what a dumb, scary, dangerous idea these would be. Now why would you want that in an animal? Not only is it still a dumb, scary, dangerous idea, but now you've lost a bit of control because you are working with a living, breathing, feeling creature. There is no need for an "attack" dog. A barking dog is sufficient.

HOD (hypertrophic osteodystrophy) in great dane puppy
alicat613 replied to a topic in Veterinary information
Oh, I am soo glad to hear she is doing better! Wonderful news! I am just terrified of HOD, but we do feed "real food" and keep him thin, so hopefully we will not have to go through this. I am just so glad to hear she is doing better! And to think, others were going to put her down. I'm so glad you took the time and energy to see her through this. You'll be rewarded with a loving lifetime friend. -
In my opinion Danes should not look like an over sized Doberman they should look like the proud boar hunter they once were.
I don't think I've ever seen a Dane that looked like a giant Dobie, and can't imagine the freakish genes that would produce that. But anyways... Do you not believe in evolution? For the breeds whose past can be brought into the present, like the GSD's traits and police work, blood hounds and SAR, etc etc, I see the need and reason to continue to breed for these traits. But what of the "useless" breeds? I'm sorry, but no one goes lion hunting, nor should they. Lions are endangered and dangerous! And who goes lion hunting in America even? So should the Cane Corso be "discontinued"? No one takes a Great Dane boar hunting any longer. Should they have no purpose? They make incredible companion dogs. They are extremely lovey, sensitive, and well-suited to the modern home. Is this not a good purpose? No, I'm not saying that people should breed for pets. I agree their are enough pets out there. My dog's breeder breeds for show, and also competes in French Ring. I'm lucky to have gotten a companion out of her breeding. But of the breeds that have no real purpose any longer, what to do? Isn't it normal for them to evolve as well? Oh, also I'm not saying I don't do anything with my dog. We play together, go on several walks a day, work on obedience, etc. but I couldn't say he has any true function.

We had a great Christmas too! Parker got a new bed, a new collar, a big bone, stuffies. And we got a bunch of framed pics of him growing up (well, the first few months).
A dog does not HAVE to be two years old to breed. There is no sudden magical transformation at this age that will reveal what your dog will produce genetically, physically or mentally, and it is not a magical age which any and all faults will suddenly be revealed.
Oh, of course not. It is silly, isn't it, how everyone jumps all over people wanting to breed dogs before they are 2. Ok, yeah, obviously I'm being sarcastic. I just don't understand how people are so willing and eager to pimp out their canine babies when they certainly would never propose such a thing for their human children. There are many dangers, risks, and costs involved in breeding, and a lot of responsibility. Beyond simply "finding good homes" you must ensure that you are not furthering genetic problems within the breed, and that the homes you pick will not be breeding, that they will care for the puppies their entire lives. And 2 years old is not an arbitrary number. Most dogs are not fully "grown up" until 2 at least, and 2 is when you can have health testing finished.
